If you have lost teeth, Dr. Mason Segura may recommend replacing them with dentures. Dentures are a removable oral appliance consisting of prosthetic teeth set into an acrylic base. They are designed to fit your mouth perfectly so that you can once again smile, eat and speak normally. There are two types of dentures — complete dentures and partial dentures. When you visit Syracuse Dental & Implants for your initial consultation, our dentist will examine your mouth and discuss your options with you to determine which type of denture is right for your needs.

We invite you to call us at 801-766-2461 to learn more about dentures in Syracuse, Utah, and to make your appointment with Dr. Segura.

Implant-Supported Dentures

denture

While dentures are an effective replacement for your missing teeth, they may have a negative long-term impact on your oral health. Because dentures only replace the crowns of your teeth and not the roots, long-term denture wear leads to bone loss and eventually to the loss of up to 90% of your bite force. For this reason, our dentist may recommend implant-supported dentures as the better option for your oral health and function. Implant-retained dentures are similar in appearance to traditional dentures but are stabilized by strategically placed dental implants. These implants replace the tooth roots, preventing your dentures from “floating” in your mouth and stimulating your supporting bone to keep it healthy and strong.

When you receive implant-supported dentures, the first step in your treatment will be placing the dental implants. While the specific number of implants will depend on your individual needs, most cases require four to six implants per denture. Sedation dentistry is available to ensure that you remain comfortable during your implant placement. After you have healed from this procedure our dentist will anchor your denture atop the implants to complete your treatment. Your final result should look, feel and function exactly like your original teeth.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are typically recommended when you have healthy teeth remaining and only need to replace a few missing teeth. They are designed to close the gaps in your smile caused by your missing teeth and work to preserve your natural teeth and keep them in place. A partial denture will help restore your appearance and oral function so that you can speak and eat normally and will provide support for your facial contours to prevent sagging.

Partials usually consist of replacement teeth fixed in an acrylic base and include a thin framework or clasps. These clasps attach to your natural teeth to help keep the denture secure and prevent it from slipping. As with full dentures, you may find that your partial feels awkward or uncomfortable for a few weeks as your mouth adjusts, but afterwards, your appliance should be comfortable to wear.

Our dentist will provide you with instructions for the care and use of your appliance to keep it in good condition. Please follow these instructions, and contact our office if your denture breaks, causes pain or has other problems preventing it from working properly for you.
